The discovery of nitrogen in lunar rock samples suggests that the Earth’s atmosphere, which dominates nitrogen, may have contributed to the Moon’s ancient atmosphere and its crust. Scientists have calculated that this shared magnetic field position with the Earth’s and Moon’s magnetosphere may have persisted from 4.1 to 3.5 billion years ago.
